What makeup foundation brands/products do not give that white/ghost look when you take pics with a flash?

Thanks!

I think you are referring to a flash picture from a regular camera not from a professional photographer pictures. A foundation properly matched should be the same colour as your skin tone. Not lighter and not darker. Often a face can look washed out in with the flash from a regular camera because the flash is not diffused and is often too close. A photographer may wish to comment on this.

You're right Carolyn. RomesChica - the problem you are referring to is overexposure and a professional photographer shouldn't allow this to happen in your photos anyway.

Your make-up should look how you want it to in real life (well blended, same colour as your skin tone as Carolyn mentioned) and a pro photographer will create well-exposed images to capture your skin tone accurately.

Hope this helps! smile

It's the titanium dioxide or Zinc Dioxide which are used in sunscreens,in foundations and powders that have the reflective ghostly effect or hot spots. I have written about this subject in the past, on this board. Professional makeup artists experienced with photographic makeup do not use such products, since they do not photograph well. On your wedding day, or whenever you're planning on having your photos taken, please make sure that you do not use "Mineral products", use only products that are non reflective, shine free, SPF, Titanium Dioxide and Zinc free.
Good Luck, Alisa

Hello, I just heard another complaint like yours from a client whose MOH got Ghostly photos from her own wedding, even though in person and to the human eye the makeup looked perfect.

Please discuss this issue with a professional makeup artist and make sure they are experienced with photographic makeup and please ask them directly what kind of foundation and powder they're using, if it's a high definition pro product you're fine.
Airbrush products are never a problem since they are High Def to begin with.

This is especially crucial when it comes to girls with Asian skin tones and medium to dark skin, since the problem could make their face look totally white, washed out and many shades lighter than the rest of their body...

Makeup sales staff who work at makeup counters do not know about this, since most of them are not certified makeup artists. I have dealt with many of them, even those who work at the prestigious counters at Holt's. They sell consumer products only, products that are not created for professional or photographic use(as opposed to Professional makeup) and these contain many of above mentioned problematic ingredients, so; my advice is that if you're planning do do your own makeup check the ingredients listed on your products. Cheers, Alisa

Just wanted to bump this thread. So basically, the colour of your foundation should still look like your natural skin colour, is that correct? Has anyone heard of using a corrector to cancel out excessively strong skin tones? (e.g. corrector is mixed in with foundation to neutralize yellow undertones to prevent something called jaundice effect in photography)

Hello, to answer your question, yes it is possible to correct certain undertones with a corrector that professionals sometimes use or a foundation that has the opposite undertone. Example: yellow undertone skin can be neutralized by using a neutral tone foundation(N) of the same intensity as your regular colour, (not any lighter or darker) but with a bit of pink in it. Make sure that you do not use a strong pink since that will look ashy and unnatural. To correct a pink or reddish undertone, you may use a neutral foundation with a touch of yellow, that should do the trick. Hope this helps. Cheers, Alisa

Thanks for the tip. The colour correctors I was referring to are actually blue, purple, etc. Makeup Forever has a line of correctors and each colour is meant for a specific purpose e.g. purple is to mask sallowness, green is to neutralize redness, blue is to even out fair skin tone, etc.) The link to the product is below just in case anyone wants clarification on these colour correctors:

http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P217906&categoryId=B70

Would it be problematic to use a blue corrector on skin with yellow undertones? Some makeup artists use it to cancel out yellow undertones so it doesn't look so sallow on camera, but how do the pictures actually come out if you use a blue corrector before applying foundation?

You probably won't get too much use out of those, those are usually good for under eye circles and some trouble spots, If you are looking to correct a sallow complexion your best bet is a foundation with a pink undertone, Try MAC N series or NW series foundations. Good luck, Alisa
